Flat Stanley Visits Wichita

Flat Stanley has been a guest at our house for about a week. Today we took him on a tour of Wichita. First to the Kansas Aviation Museum at the old Wichita Airport near McConnell Air Force Base. We also showed him where Sean and Ian used to live before his Dad moved them to a far away land full of hairy cows and cheese curds. Then Stanley who loves pizza wanted to see the first Pizza Hut which is now at Wichita State University. Then he wanted to see where Sean's dad went to school, so we took him to the Beta House. He spent time feeding the fish in Poppi's pond and is now ready to travel back to Woodland Elementry in Gurnee, Ill.

Snow Dragon surfaces in Wichita!

The snow and ice have moved east and the TV weatherman isn't going boonkers. Today is sunny and clear. We did however stumble on this snow dragon this morning. This is highly unusual as their normal habitat is rural eastern-Iowa. Perhaps they are in season in Iowa and this one knew enough to migrate south.

Went out looking for fun winter things to photograph this morning. but the 19 degrees kept most folks inside. The east side only got about 3-4 inches max, so it wasn't as photogenic as I have hoped. This kept me out of the office and focused on something more than work.

PC Basics......Back up your files!!!!

It doesn't matter how many times I've been told, read or heard...back up the files you want on your computer. Something went wrong Sunday and my pc was rushed to intnesive care early Monday. After two days of surgery it is now trying to recuperate and restore at home.

Biggest hassel is the lost email address book! So for those reading this send me an email and I can start to rebuild my contacts.

Public Radio

It is probably time for me to take a break talking about texting and driving. Todays posting is about public radio. Okay, I admit it. For several years I listened and never gave to support my local station. It's easy to say, well the public (whoever that is) takes care of it.

I'm now a member and would encourage others to send in what they can to support their local public station. KMUW is on my office radio, car radio and at home. Let's face it, Car Talk, Wait-Wait, Prarrie Home Companion are very entertaing. NPR News and Talk of the Nation keep me informed. I also enjoy Marketplace. Perhaps its my advancing age, but the programming sure beats most commercial radio stations.

News Operations used to value credibility!

I'm trying to look at the bright side of this mornings news. Sarah Palin is joining Fox News.

Did I miss her time earning her stripes as a credible news person? Perhaps I should be focused on the fact that she might be out of government. Maybe the best part of this will be future SNL skits. I must admit the stuff during the campaign hit my funny bone.

So to all those KU, MU and Syracuse students who aspire to become broadcast journalists. Run for governor first!

Illinois Bans Texting while Driving!

The new year brought a new law in the State of Illinois. It is now Illegal to text and drive!

Other states are fast adopting similar laws. I am most anxious for Kansas to get their on the books. I know people who are so very careful about making sure their children and buckled in their car seats, yet they text and drive, talk on the cell and other unsafe actions...with their children in the car! My question is why bother to secure the kids? or the Pets?

For me, I am going to work hard on not talking on the cell phone while driving. Parents must set the example.

Sunday Dec. 27- Kids all left this morning. Boy is it quiet! 3+ enjoyable days having everyone here. (Including their dogs!) This year we welcomed Chelsea Krohe into our family. She and Tim will be married next October. We know it was hard for her to not be with her family in Iowa.

Ryan, Tash and three boyz, made the long drive from Chicago to Wichita. Really glad they did. Trish was a big help and we all took turns with the chores. I've posted a 4 minute video on You Tube to share a few candid photos of our family fun.

Drive 1,500 miles then put up the tree

I guess it will be FaLaLaLa-La for the next month, so I better just deal with it. One way will be for me to focus on just how fortunate I am. On our drive to Gurnee, Il for Thanksgiving, Mr. Garmin routed us through Northeast Missouri. I was struck by the number of boarded up homes, closed businesses and general depressed conditions. Reminder of while I'm thankful.

Why would anyone blog about a sump pump?

4:22 a.m. I hear a faint ringing as I roll over only to realize it's the water alarm on the sump pump in the basement. DAMN! Power was on so I couldn't imagine what the problem could be. Got to the basement and found the sump pumping a dry well. It was blowing a spray of water and would not turn off. After unplugging it, I began my investigation. Cuase: UNKNOWN- TIME TO CALL ROTO-ROOTER PLUMBING.
So now I wait for the plumber to arrive and fix or relace the pump. For the pump to still be under warranty would be wonderful, but I'm not betting the ranch on that.

What's even more interesting is they all mostly young women. Don't they read my "Wall"? Says right there I'm married. Perhaps they don't care. FOX SPORTS...Todays NFL Show was Great.

I was most impressed with the Pre-Game Show the Fox Gang did from Afganistan. Their tribute to our men and women in the service was fantastic. They have been on the airbase most of the week and did a super job. It appeared that the service men and women there also enjoyed it. Gotta Love Terry Bradshaw leading "God Bless America" Wednesday is Veterans Day, we owe them more than we can ever repay them for their service and in some cases their lives. Incaste you missed it. Try this.

I fully expect that things will be a little crazy for the next few months, so I think I'll just stay out da way and let the planning begin. I can say "Yes dear" as well as anyone.

As seen above the happy couple are in full blown planning mode. They really are happy and I'm glad. (Whatever happened to that damn cat?)

Lots of decisions to be made. Lists to begin. Sites to be surveyed. Colors to be selected. Orange Tux? Hotel Delux? Assignments to be made. ...and Bills to be paid! (Kinda Dr. Suess of me huh?) I'm just sayin...................

So, its probably best if ole Poppy just hang low out of sight and let Miss C-Jo and her people do their thing. I am kind of excited as we will have another opportunity for Tash to do the chicken dance...this time with all four of her boyz!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jury Duty Observations

One thing about Jury Duty is the great variety of people watching opportunities. We come in all sizes, shapes and personalities. Some of us gripe about being "called", others relish in getting out of work or the house.

I was most impressed with a young woman sitting near me while we waited to be selected or released. She said she worked giving home care to the elderly. Her employer did not pay her while on jury duty and she was loosing a lot of money not being at work. She stated this as a fact. She was not complaining, in fact her attitude was great. Just by looking at her you knew she needed the money. Meanwhile a young man in the jury room could not stop talking about how great this was to be getting paid by his company and the District Court at the same time.

Just doesn't seem fair that this young lady, who so obviously needed the money, sat there listening to the young mans' loud and outlandish claims. A lesson in what we say in public and how our words might hurt others.

Its back to work this morning, I was not selected and released.

Growing Older is not for Sissys

Seems like only a few weeks ago my siblings honored me with a surprise 60 th birthday party. It was great fun and I loved it. Now this week one of my younger sisters turns 60! (No names here, but she knows who she is...Right Booness?) we are surrounded by senior citizens. Some thoughts on being over sixty:

there are actually some good articles in the AARP magazine
I didn't know my cleaners gave a seniors discount until I asked..wonder who else does?
I count getting up in the middle of the night as exercise, not bladder problems
the important things in life are more visible, family, friends, faith
I can say what I want on my blog and not worry
taking a nap on Saturday or Sunday afternoon is my right and I like it

Sure there is pleanty left to do, learn and see, and when I'm damn good and ready I just might do some of it. Now if I can just keep from getting eyebrows as bushy as Andy Rooney's, I'll be in good shape.

That's my styory and I'm sticking to it! Happy birthday Sis. (Kelly is well over 60 sorry I missed yours)

Poll results: NO TEXTING WHILE DRIVING!

Okay, so there was not a huge response to my poll. But 91% who did vote said they would support a ban on texting while driving.

I have one co-worker who actually pulled over to the side of the road to take a cell phone call! So a little awareness among people I care about is worth my rants. I know there are still a few that view themselves as invincable and able to drive, text and sing at the same time. For you, I will keep you in my prayers that you remain safe.

Curling Eyelashes, as bad or worse than texting?

Happy Sunday. Still a few days left to vote on a ban of texting and driving. (See poll to the right) I would also hope our legislators would include updating your facebook page, blogging with the vehicle in motion, and playing paper toss on your iPhone.

While I believe all of the above are dangerous, what about putting on eye makeup while driving, reading the paper, shaving and other assorted tasks which are not related to operating a vehicle. If you get behind the wheel to drive, then drive, with all your attention and skills focused on safe driving. Perhaps rather than limit and ban just texting, we should strengthen laws regarding inattentive driving of all forms.

My Columbus Day 2009 Kick Off to NO TEXTING AND DRIVING Campaign is gaining support!.

So far Trish O'Donnell has agreed, Ryan is not texting and driving at this time and my friend Pam has agreed to support this effort. I hopeful that I will soon hear from son Tim and his girlfriend from Iowa, the Consultant, MS C-Jo that they will joing the effort.

Next we need the Mom of the 3 Amigos, Mrs. Natasha to also pledge not to text & drive.

When I started this Blog, it was to be thoughts from a Baby Boomers perspective for whatever that's worth.

Today's rant! I really want to see a movement to stop texting and driving. Scares the hell out of me. Yes, I use my cell phone and on occasion a GPA, I'm trying to limit that and wish you would too. My children finally got me to start wearing my seat belt. (Click it or Ticket didn't hurt) Now I wish they would follow suit and stop texting while driving. They could join me in a campaign to get their friends and families to join in. Let's start a fad. Let's say it all began on Columbus Day 2009.

Kansas Attorney General Speaks Out on Domestic Violence

I was pleased to read in today's Wichita Eagle a letter from the Kansas Attorney General Steve Six. His letter called for people to take a stand against domestic violence. He outlined some of the efforts of his office in working with others across the state to serve those touched by abuse and violence.

The letter was timely in that October is domestic violence awareness month. I would ask anyone who might read this blog to think for a moment about people you know and I'll bet you can identify someone who has been abused, neglected, controlled, or injured. Clearly one in four women in this country have suffered from some form of abuse. Isn't it time we work to change this blight on our society?

If you or someone you know needs help call 1-888-END-ABUSE. If you are in immediate danger call 911.

How Important is all this new technology to us Baby Boomers?

Okay, I'm going to try again to see if I become a consistent Blogger; is any real benefit for me, my family and the things I care about.

As you will see, I have jumped into the world of Google. Google Voice, Blogger, You Tube, AdSense and iGoogle for my homepage. Why Google? I first became interested when I started using Google Alerts. I need to keep up on news and information that would impact my work. While not every alert I receive is of benefit, the ones that are really help.

I use Alerts to keep track of people important to my work. When they make news, I am able to send them a note of congratulations or if the news is not positive, well...let's say I can politely avoid them. I also track issues like domestic violence. I work to bring support to StepStone, a transitional housing program for women and children after they leave shelter. I learn what is happening around the world regarding this issue.

I am also interested in how people are communicating. While I prefer face-to-face, I know the Internet is an important avenue and I need to better undertand it.

I'm ready for some positive!

I don't know about you, but I'm ready for some positive. I'm ready for warmer weather and some better news on the economy. Perhaps, I'm just getting a little grumpier as I age. Damn, who know 63 would come this fast!

I guess the only way to turn things around is to make our own positive! So, here's what I'd like anyone who reads this to do. Find your nearest family member, friend or neighbor and let them know how much they mean to you. Thank them for all they do for you. Now doesn't that make you feel better?

Domestic Violence Ministry Facing New Challenges

Being a survivor of domestic violence is more than anyone should experience. However if you are also undocumented and can not legally work to support yourself and children how would you survive?
This is exactly what two of our StepStone clients are facing. One is a 45 year old Russian woman who came to the United States as a mail order bride only to find herself in the control of an abuser. From the start she was locked in her room with no food or water when the abuser was at work or away. After a week she was able to free herself and connect with a relative on the east coast. She worked there as a pharmacy tech for awhile then met and married a man who brought her with him to a new job in Wichita. The relationship turned even more abusive than the first. Her son joined her during this time and she found the courage to leave her husband and seek shelter. During the course of these events she lost her visa and work permit due to a technicality regarding who had sponsored her coming to this country.
The second woman is a 46 year old Mexican woman with a 13 year old daughter. Her abuser is now in prison for sexually molesting her daughter. Now without documentation she is unable to work or receive any benefits. StepStone staff advocates are working with other local agencies to provide support and assistance to both women.
At this time StepStone is covering all their rent, utilities, groceries and transportation needs. Both women have been willing to learn and have volunteered to clean StepStone houses or help with other projects as a way to contribute to their own upkeep.

Domestic Violence Increasing

The rate of domestic violence is alarming! If it is 18 cases per day in Wichita Kansas, can you imagine what it might be in Detroit? The stress of massive job losses, the current economy and uncertainty all increase violence. In addition many families of our returning troops are also suffering with the stress of fighting a war. Are we prepared to help?

Most agencies serving survivors of domestic violence are already overwhelmed. I would like to help raise the awareness of this issue and need your help. If you have a story to tell or would like to help contact me.

Today we hit the road. First stop Kansas City to pick up Trish and Tim then on to St. Paul, MN. Thanksgiving with the relatives. It will be a quick trip and the weather looks fair. We will get to see the grandson's, Ryan and Tash. Linda's family will all be there. I'm thankful that we can travel and be together.

I'm also thankful for the many people who have given to help feed those in need over the holidays. I'm, thankful for the volunteers who give so much of their time and talent to help us serve the dear neighbor. I'm referring to my job with the Sisters of St. Joseph Dear Neighbor Ministries.

A new President

In two days we will elect a new President of the United States. It's been a long two years since this campaign started. I for one am ready for new leadership. I will vote on Tuesday and I will also pray that all elected will serve faithfully for the common good.

This is a great country. We need to ensure our children and their children will live with the same freedoms and rights we have enjoyed.

As one of the first boomers, I will also pray that our leaders can figure out how to meet the demands of seniors.

My rants about domestic violence haven't received much attention as far as I know, so why not start a new one?

Plastic Bags. My garage is full them and I don't know the best way to dispose of them. You see our fair city is somewhere back in the dark ages as far as recycling is concerned. I recently viewed one of the powerpoint presentations that make their way through cyberspace. If the facts were true, and I have no reason to believe they were not, then our planet has a festering infection from these bags that will be a huge problem for my grandchildren.

So, I've started telling the bag boy at the store that I want paper! This initially is a shock, but I plan soon to try and start taking our own cloth bags. Can an ole dog learn new tricks? We'll see. Stay turned.

Help for parents of domestic violence victims

The internet is full of great resources for victims of domestic violence. We hope that continues to grow and bring help to women and children.

What is missing is very much in the way of helping parents, sibilings and friends of the victim. We are looking for ways to rectify that. A book? On-line guide? Something to help others when their loved one is in an abusive relationship.

Florida Ironman Helps Domestic Violence Survivors

October is domestic violence awareness month, among other things. It also means we will be in Florida in a little over a month to watch our son, Tim reach his goal of completing the 140 mile endurance race in under 12 hours.

Tim's second goal is to raise money for StepStone, the only transitional housing program of its kind in the state. Click on the headline and you can see how he's doing. Making a difference

This old man is proud of what his children are doing for themselves and others. Ryan, Natasha and Trish are doing marathons while Tim is about to do his second full Ironman. Together they will have raised over $15,000 for chairty!

Ironman dedicated to help survivors of domestic violence

This has been a busy summer especially for my children. All four are involved in some short of running marathon. Trish and Tash, are both competing in the Nike Women's Challenge in San Francisco, Ryan is involved is Race Chartities a new organizations to raise money for early detection of cancer and Tim is training for his second Ironman event.

He is entered in Ironman Florida on Nov. 3 in Panama City. Tim has two goals; complete the 140 mile race in less than 12 hours and raise $15,000 for StepStone a transitional housing program for women and children survivors of domestic violence.

I am hopeful that by posting this in a blog we can find other runners, bikers or swimmers who would like to help Tim on his second gaol. As of this posting he has raised a little over $3,000.

Tim is a graduate of the University of Kansas, and works for CareerBuilder in Kansas City. Come on Jayhawk fans lets help Tim reach his goal!

Life is good!

Here we are in the sweltering heat of summer. I think the monsoon season for Kansas is now over. The entire family was home last week and that really makes this old guy happy. Sean and Ian help me pick out some new goldfish and tadpoles for the pond.

The rest of the tribe was involved in a memorial run for Glory Gnesch. I was especially proud of Trish and Tash. While they were the last two to finish they didn't quit. I'm sure their team in training partners are proud of them as well.

Things are just so much better for this family than they were last year. Enough said about that.

Trips to the Nike women's run in San Francisco and the Florida Ironman need planning and tickets. This week I'm off the Cleveland to work on the evolving direction of my work with the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Other news this week--Linda's tomato crop is so huge we are eating them for every meal. I did make what I call Chicken Bruchetta and it was magnificent, if I do say so myself. Made up the recipe and it really worked...out of the ballpark as they say.

Ironman working for domestic violence victims

Four months to go before the Florida Ironman in Panama City. The weather in Kansas has keep Tim from an ideal training routine--rain, rain and rain. This ole guy can't do much to help him train for the event, but I can try to help spread the word about his goal to rasise $15,000 for StepStone, a transitional housing program for survivors of domestic violence. Today we're at a little over $2,000 hopefully we can build on that and do much better in the near future.

We'd like to find other runners who might get involved with the Janus Charity Challenge and even consider raising money for another program that serves survivors of domestic violence.

A Fathers Day wish

I have been very blessed to have three great kids. But today I am thinking about all the children who are, or have been in abusives families. Kids that don't realize violence against women is not normal. Hitting, coercive behaviors, isolation from family and other friends and the many other forms of domestice abuse.

The boys who see this think it is an okay way to treat women, even their mothers. The girls tend to marry or partner with abusive men, because that's what they are used to.

So on the Fathers Day 2007, while I enjoy my wife and children, I pray for families broken apart by abuse. I also wish for others to work toward a systemic change in society that does not glamorize or otherwise condone abusive behaviors.

If one person reads this blog and stops to think about what they could do to help, I'll be a very happy guy.

Ironman

This summer the family is focused on running. The women are competing in San Francisco, Ryan just ran in Madison and Tim has a full plate of events ending with the Ironman in Panama City, Fla. in November. He has two goals: Finish in under 12 hours and raise $15,000 for StepStone.

StepStone is a transitional housing program for women and children victims of domestic violence. Tim has entered the Janus Charity Challenge to accomplish this second goal. You can click on the logo to the left to see how much he has raised to date. The great thing is that if he is one of the top fund raisers for the Florida event, Janus will add to the proceeds for StepStone.

More housing needed

Following a stay in an emergency shelter, which is normally 30-45 days, a woman and her children most likely face the decision of returning to their abuser or homelessness. That is why StepStone was founded. To provide affordable housing in safe neighborhoods for up to two years.

Since 1996, we have helped nearly 500 women and children. However, the demand is much greater. We need to find the support for additional housing. That search is now underway and it has a twist. National statistics are that one-in-three women are victims of abuse. Just think about that the next time you are in a crowd of people. The work we do serves only a small number of women and their children. In fact, we can't keep up witht the demand for our transitional housing. Recently we had 17 applicants for one opening.

Currently we are in the process of searching for additional housing that can be accuired at a reasonable cost. In our community alone, police report they investigate nearly 20 new cases of domestic violence a day! Think about how many other go un-reported!

Domestic violence can be found in every zip code, race, and economic status! DV follows its victims to work and has a huge impact on the company.

Today, I am all over the place with my comments, hopefully I will get focused and find a thread of logic that is easy to follow.

Posting a blog. Going public with my thoughts, rants and sometimes serious pleas for help. The primary motivation for doing this will become evident. I'm looking for help and support for a worthy cause--survicors of domestic violence. More on that soon.

Just couldn't resist the photo of me and nice trout caught in Park County Colorado. This is truly what I'd most enjoy doing with the better part of my day.
